Traditions/Holidays of Ashanti Ethnic Group

One tradition is for weddings and christenings, they have chicken and dwarf goats. The Ashanti also celebrate Christmas, but Kwanzaa. They use drums a lot to communicate. Masks are used as well in dancing and other religious activities.

Foods of Ashanti Ethnic Group

Ashanti's foods consist of tropical yams, plantain, and cassava. Their main dish is FuFu, which is served with a stew or soup. Corn and rice is also a very popular item. Bread is mainly used only at breakfast.

Clothing of Ashanti Ethnic Group



Bark cloth was used before clothing weaving was introduced.  With weaving, there is cotton and silk. Women may collect cotton or spin materials into thread, but only men are allowed to weave. There are numerous patterns in weaving, each with its own name.

Kente Cloth
Strips of kente measured about 4 inches wide are sewn together into larger pieces of cloth. Cloth is in several colors, sizes, and designs and are worn during significant social and religious occasions. Kente is a clear representation of ethics, social of code conduct, history, philosophy, oral literature, moral values, religious beliefs, political thought, and aesthetic principles.

Language of Ashanti Ethnic Group

The language of the Ashanti ethnic group is Twi. The official language is English, but it is not spoken by many villagers. The language is very rich in proverbs, the use of which is taken to be a sign of wisdom.
Ex. Rather than say "the King has died", one would say "a mighty tree has fallen".

Religion of Ashanti Ethnic Group

The Ashanti region is a combination of spiritual and supernatural powers. They presuppose plants, animals, and trees have souls. They also have faith in witches, fairies, and forest monsters. The Ashanti people train many rites for marriage, death, puberty, and birth. They a symbol, the golden stool. It is very sacred to the Ashanti. The golden stool is protected carefully. As an Ashanti symbol, the golden stool stands for the worship of ancestors, well-being, and the nation of Africa.


Location of Ashanti Ethnic Group

The Ashanti lives in central Ghana in western Africa. They live in the ancient capital of the Ashanti kingdom, Kumasi. The Ashanti live in an enlarged family. The family resides in numerous homes or huts that are set up near courtyards. The Ashanti region is the 3rd largest region in the country of Africa.
