Clothing of Ashanti Ethnic Group

Bark cloth was used before clothing weaving was introduced.  With weaving, there is cotton and silk. Women may collect cotton or spin materials into thread, but only men are allowed to weave. There are numerous patterns in weaving, each with its own name.

Kente Cloth
Strips of kente measured about 4 inches wide are sewn together into larger pieces of cloth. Cloth is in several colors, sizes, and designs and are worn during significant social and religious occasions. Kente is a clear representation of ethics, social of code conduct, history, philosophy, oral literature, moral values, religious beliefs, political thought, and aesthetic principles.
